The History of the Saskatchewan Riverside Vipond
The Vipond Golf Classic had its beginnings in 1984 when a group of Saskatoon businessmen and strong advocates for individuals with intellectual and multiple disabilities collaborated to organize the first tournament similar to the format established by Jim Vipond in the 1970’s in Ontario.

The Venue
Riverside Country Club is the original and only facility ever engaged to play host to the Vipond Golf Classic, and for over a quarter of a century now, this Club has played a vital role and been an essential partner in the mission to enhance the quality of life for persons with intellectual and multiple disabilities in Saskatoon and surrounding area. Each and every year, the members of this private club and its board of directors very generously donate the use of their superb facility and perfectly manicured grounds for this well known and loved charity tournament, now proudly called the Riverside Vipond Golf Classic.

The tournament has enjoyed great success over the years, and it has proven to be one of the most prestigious golfing events in Saskatchewan, very popular with the 240-plus golfers who enroll in the match each year. While being an exclusive club open only to members and their guests, Riverside Country Club, on “Vipond Day”, establishes a direct connection to the community-at-large and allows many non-member golfers to enjoy the fine amenities that the Club offers. Many businesses in Saskatoon and the province of Saskatchewan are pleased to be associated with the Riverside Vipond because of the fine reputation held by Riverside Country Club throughout the province. Their support to the cause adds immensely to the viability of the tournament and helps the Riverside Vipond ensure its ability to fulfill its ongoing mandate.

The Beneficiaries and Supporting Agencies
Adults with intellectual and/or multiple disabilities have benefited via the following community-based agencies:

  • Elmwood Residences Inc.
Is dedicated to establishing and maintaining a number of group homes for persons with intellectual disabilities within which an atmosphere of support, love, and sense of family fosters the dream that these individuals can live a rich life, filled with choice in their community and support to each other as they go through life together.

  • Cosmopolitan Industries Ltd. (Cosmo)
Is committed to providing many diverse vocational work, non-vocational activities, and support options for the full spectrum of adults with intellectual disabilities. Respecting the dignity and needs of each individual, Cosmo creates opportunities, provides support and challenges participants with intellectual disabilities to reach their full potential.

  • Community Living Association of Saskatoon Inc. (CLASI)
Supports choices for people with disabilities and their families in the area of education, employment/day-programs, housing, recreation and respite. The Riverside Vipond supports CLASI’s “Summer Fun Program” for children with intellectual disabilities.

  • Choices Saskatchewan Advocates for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, Inc.
Promotes and protects the interests of individuals with intellectual disabilities in Saskatchewan and works to preserve the facilities and services necessary to sustain their well being and promote and enhance their independence and quality of life.

The Proceeds
Over the past 26 years, more than $1 Million has been raised to fund the many capital and non-capital projects undertaken by the above agencies for the benefit of those individuals in our community who require support in their daily lives. One example of which we are especially proud is a specially designed Snoezelen Room that has been constructed and equipped to help provide calming sensory stimulation and relaxation for individuals with severe disabilities. It is a most pleasant space and very conducive to the needs of many people. Many other projects have also been made possible through this fundraising vehicle.
